Mechanism Design in the Spirit of George and Vickrey

The founder of Mechanism Design (MD) was arguably not William Vickrey but his intellectual inspiration and founder of the Progressive movement, Henry George.  Following George, Vickrey hoped his work would allow for dramatic, but decentralized and democratic, improvement upon the waste and injustice he saw in the capitalism of his time.  The potential of this vision is tremendous, given that, as social critics and theorists have argued for centuries, the models that justify standard capitalism and the nation state as anywhere near optimal leave out most of what we know about social life.  With the widespread discontent with existing political economies, furthermore, it seems an idea whose time has come. Delivering on such a radical vision, however, requires a very different path for MD than it has mostly taken recently, one where it understands itself in close conversation and collaboration with a range of other disciplines, methods and social forces.  I’ll illustrate this argument with some examples of my own attempts to follow such as path, including the many limitations of those efforts that suggest next steps and pose open questions.
